Telling the Tale of Two Cities

This 73-year-old tour guide is proud of New York. But she also teaches people how to navigate a less glamorous side of her beloved city.

Bonnie Baker Taganashi, 73, has been a tour guide in New York City for two decades. The NYC native — whose grandfather, she says, was the sheriff of Flatbush, Brooklyn — is proud of her city. She leads the tour of Times Square, the Chelsea Market, South Street Sea Port, the New York Harbor, and Rockefeller Center.

Yet three times a week, this kindly woman takes off her tour guide jacket to teach people how to navigate a less glamorous side of the city.
