The Bronx’s Best Music Teacher

Back in 2010, Melissa Salguero, 33, created a music program from scratch for PS 48 Middle School in Hunts Point, the Bronx. Now her students wake up an hour earlier to come to school for band practice. Most of them live in what is one of the poorest areas in the nation. There, one in three children live in homeless shelters.

Her innovative approach to teaching, which mixes science and music, has paid off.  Last January, she won the biggest prize for educators in the music world, after being selected among thousands of other teachers across the nation.
