Mayor Bill de Blasio released his Vision Zero plan last month as part of an effort to eliminate traffic deaths in the city within ten years.
The plan includes over 50 proposals. Among them: lowering the city-wide speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25, and increased enforcement of traffic violations.
Vision Zero also reforms how taxi drivers are penalized, a move that has drawn criticism from the industry. De Blasio says the reforms are necessary because taxis can act as pacesetters for the rest of traffic.
De Blasio released the plan to fulfill a campaign promise, and it is an especially important topic now in light of multiple recent traffic deaths.
