When New York Counts its Homeless Population

Once a year, the city of New York counts the number of homeless individuals living on the streets. According to the Department of Homeless Services, New York has 3,180 homeless living in enclosed public spaces and another 1,339 unsheltered citizens across the city.

On Jan 27, between 10:00 p.m and 4:00 a.m., thousands of volunteers canvassed parks, subways, and other public spaces to administer the survey called HOPE (Homeless Outreach Population Estimate).  With the data collected, the Department of Homeless Services allocates resources for temporary, emergency shelter and re-housing support.  NY City Lens followed the volunteers.
