Dangerous Street Angers Brooklyn Residents

A left turn from the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn has caused an uproar among residents of Bridge Plaza, the neighborhood that borders the most dangerous intersection in the city, Flatbush Avenue and Tillary Street.

The once-quiet Concord Street is home to two schools, a community garden and a playground, yet buses and trucks continue to speed down the street since the Department of Transportation installed a 24-hour left-hand turn in October.

Since then, there have been 16 accidents on Concord Street.

Last month, the Department of Transportation restricted the hours for the turn to between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., after locals protested unsafe walking conditions and noisy streets. But several residents still have expressed concerns.

“We really believe no traffic should be coming down that street at all,” William Vinicombe said. “It’s not designed to be an off ramp.”
