Thousands of Donald Trump’s critics held a rally outside a Republican fundraiser in Midtown Manhattan on April 14, and it got off on the wrong foot. The demonstration began violently, with one Trump supporter punching a protestor. The Trump fan was taken away by the police, one of 31 arrests at the event, according to the NYPD.
Protestors had no single grievance. Signs bore messages ranging from supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and the fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour to signs calling Trump a fascist. Activists representing groups such as the transgender community and the Muslim faith gave speeches.
A recurring theme among protestors was Trump’s promise to deport 11 million undocumented Latinos. Chants erupted, including “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido,” which roughly translates from Spanish to “the town united will not be defeated.” Despite the vitriol, the event had its moments of levity. Several protestors brought instruments with them and began jamming while attendees danced.
The rally occurred in advance of the April 19 New York primaries—the first primaries here in decades in which no candidate has earned enough delegates to lock up the nomination.
