When La Jornada, a food pantry, opened its new location at the James A. Bland houses in Flushing in mid-March, it was tasked with aiding several hundred seniors in the neighborhood. But days after launching, the entire city went into shutdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Thousands of people suddenly out of work and in need of food began showing up, while many others who could not leave their homes called to request deliveries. Now, La Jornada is in a daily mad dash to obtain food, funding, and safety equipment for the brave volunteers who risk their health to help others.
