ILLUMINATING THE RICH AND VARIED LIFE OF NEW YORK CITY

A Mushroom Grows in Brooklyn

Brooklyn, New York is home to the city’s only mushroom farm: Smallhold. Started in 2017, the farm’s original location was in a shipping container under the Brooklyn bridge. Since then, co-founders Adam DiMartino and Andrew Carter have relocated to a warehouse near the Brooklyn Navy Yard and today grow roughly ten varieties of specialty mushrooms. And while it seems mushrooms can survive anything from extreme temperatures to fruiting in your bathroom, producing large quantities in a small space takes time, technology, and effort.
