ILLUMINATING THE RICH AND VARIED LIFE OF NEW YORK CITY

In New York City’s East Village, Julia Knox shapes, trims, and sews vintage felts and interwoven straw to craft handmade hats. Knox does this all on an industrial revolution-era sewing machine in a 300 square-foot shop she describes as a ‘hat works.’ Once a required accessory for leaving the house, hats faded from fashion in the 1960s but today fedoras, berets, and even fascinators are back on the streets of New York.
