Chinese Lions Roar in New Year Celebrations

(Produced by Nadeem Shad / NY City Lens)

Dragons, lions, drumming and chanting could be heard around lower Manhattan at the Lunar New Year’s celebrations last weekend. A regular sight at the annual Chinatown celebration, dance troupes took to the streets in costume to bless local stores. The Chinese Freemason Athletic Club one such group, decided to dress up as lions. A tradition with roots as far back as the Qin Dynasty.

Established in 1956, the club frequently puts on shows for weddings and grand openings with a style of dance that incorporates Kung Fu.
