Venezuela is in the midst of a social and humanitarian crisis. Hyperinflation and food and medicine shortages under President Nicolas Maduro have led to massive social and political unrest. Almost 90 percent of all Venezuelans live in poverty, according to the UN. Medicines of any kind are difficult to find, let alone antiretroviral drugs for HIV. One organization in New York is trying to help out of a small office in SoHo. Jesus Aguais, the director of AID for AIDS international, runs an HIV medicine recycling program that sends medicine to more than 43 countries. It is now focusing its medication collection on Venezuela to help people in the country get access to life-changing medicine.
